India’s green finance needs are facing a persistent shortage

Next week will mark an important shift from the Trumpian era when the new American president, Joe Biden, presides over a special meeting of world leaders to reshape the agenda on climate change. The renewed focus on climate change by the US administration comes amidst growing investor interest in green investments globally.

For India, this presents both a challenge and an opportunity. India will have to walk a tightrope between the demands of climate justice (much of global climate change is because of the past actions of developed markets) and the need to show commitment to a carbon-light future. The opportunity to make use of this push towards green investments can be realized only if financing constraints for renewable energy and other green initiatives can be eased.

Green finance flows in India amounted to 1.11 trillion and 1.37 trillion in 2016-17 and 2017-18, respectively, according to the Climate Policy Initiative (CPI), a policy analysis and advisory organization. That’s roughly 10% of India’s estimated annual requirement. The Indian ministry of environment, forests and climate change estimates the country will require 162.5 trillion (USD 2.5 trillion) from 2015 to 2030, or roughly 11 trillion per year, for effective climate action.

About 85% of this came from domestic sources, with private players such as commercial banks and corporations accounting for two-thirds of this. The remaining 15% originated from international sources such as foreign direct investment (FDI) and development finance institutions. Greater foreign investment would be key to India realizing its climate goals.

Power Play

According to the CPI report, around 80% of the total green finance in the 2016-18 period was directed towards the power generation sector. This is in line with global trends. A further sub-sector classification reveals that solar power projects received nearly 41% of all funds in the two-year period, followed by wind energy generation at 23%.

Close to 8% of these funds were directed towards Mass Rapid Transit Systems (MRTS) projects such as the Metro rail. However, the CPI report notes that while the two fiscal years examined were not significant in terms of transportation projects, there is an upward trend in capital expenditure on MRTS systems by the central and state governments and greater investment is expected in this sector going ahead.

Regulatory Nudges

The central bank can play an instrumental role in steering finance towards green investments. This can be done by mandating climate-related disclosures by banks, directed and concessional lending towards green investment, and the establishment of green financial institutions. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), as part of its green finance initiative, included the small renewable energy sector under priority sector lending in 2015. Yet, bank credit to the renewable energy sector remains dismal: 0.5% of total bank credit and 7.9% of total power sector credit. The RBI expects this ratio to improve as renewable energy gets adopted in greater measure in the coming years.

Green bonds are another popular mode of raising green finance. Since January 2018, India has seen about $8 billion worth of such bonds, a January report in RBI’s monthly bulletin said. Yet, that amounts to just 0.7% of all bonds issued in India. The RBI report said that green bonds are costlier because of greater risk perception and the higher upfront costs of green investments.

Market Premium

Companies and fund managers, too, are looking at this space with interest. From a corporate governance perspective, green finance is subsumed under the broader concept of sustainability finance. In addition to the environmental impact, this also considers the economic and social sustainability of a business. The resultant ESG (environment, social and governance) framework provides a formal mechanism to measure the sustainability and ethical impacts of an investment in a company. ESG, therefore, ties in with socially responsible investing.

In India, the NIFTY100 ESG index re-computes the weightage of the 100 companies in the NIFTY 100 by also incorporating their ESG scores. Between April 2016 and December 2019, the NIFTY100 ESG Index returned marginally more than the NIFTY 50. But since then that gap has widened, especially during the pandemic. With various environmental reforms being undertaken, globally and in India, companies with higher ESG scores could outperform over the long term.

What happens in the Biden meeting will have ramifications for both India’s energy policy and stock markets.

Qatar orders arrest of finance minister

Qatar’s public prosecutor has ordered the arrest of the finance minister to question him over alleged abuse of power and misuse of public funds in the energy-rich state.

The Qatar News Agency did not provide other details about the investigation, and the nature of the case against Ali Sharif al-Emadi, who has served finance minister since 2013, was not immediately clear.

Al-Emadi rose to prominence in the Gulf Arab emirate of Qatar after overseeing the growth of Qatar National Bank for years.

The statement said authorities were investigating reported crimes related to his public role. Arrests of such a high-ranking officials on suspicion of corruption are rare in Qatar.

Corruption remains rampant in Gulf Arab sheikhdoms flush with petrodollars and in the wider Middle East.

In its 2020 corruption perceptions index, which surveys economic experts about the perceived level of public sector corruption, corruption watchdog Transparency International listed Qatar among the least corrupt in the region, with a score of 63 out of 100.

The scale ranks countries between zero, which is “highly corrupt,” and 100, for “very clean.”

Financial, IT stocks give Sensex 272-pt lift as bulls rule Street for second day

NEW DELHI: Domestic equity benchmarks rose for a second straight day on Thursday amid buying in defensives such as IT and financial stocks on hopes of a faster recovery after greater access to vaccines as the US decided to waive Covid-19 intellectual property rights.

Vaccinations are likely to pick up now even as India continues to report a record number of daily cases and a positive global market is aiding the domestic market to ride a positive wave, say analysts.

The 30-share pack Sensex rose 272.21 points or 0.56 per cent to close at 48,949.76. The index traded in the range of nearly 400 points during the day. Its broader peer NSE Nifty advanced 106.95 points or 0.73 per cent to settle at 14,724.80.

“Biden’s decision to waive intellectual property rights on vaccines pumped in global optimism. Metal stocks continued to outshine other sectors as it kick-started its earning season on a better-than-expected note. Auto and IT were the other sectoral leaders while mid- and small-cap stocks mirrored the trend,” said Vinod Nair, Head of Research at

Horizon Global Reports Financial Results for First Quarter 2021

First Quarter Highlights

  • Net sales of $199.2 million; increase of $35.9 million, or 22.0%, compared to prior year comparable period

  • Gross profit of $40.6 million; increase of $14.3 million over prior year comparable period. Gross profit margin(4) of 20.4% compared to 16.1% gross profit margin(4) during prior year comparable period

Horizon Global Corporation (NYSE: HZN), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of branded towing and trailering equipment, today reported financial results for the first quarter of 2021.

“We carried our positive momentum from 2020 into the first quarter of 2021, with our continued operational improvement initiatives driving significantly improved financial performance,” stated Terry Gohl, Horizon Global’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our global team has shown great tenacity as the Company continues to thrive in this unprecedented macro-economic environment. Our first quarter financial results reflect improvement across the board, from sales to profitability, as we continued to execute to our plan and received outstanding support from our customers and suppliers across the globe.”

Gohl continued, “While a proportion of our period-over-period net sales increase is attributable to the COVID-impacted environment in the back half of March 2020, demand levels in January and February 2021 far exceeded those from the prior year periods. The sales increase is even more impactful when considering industry-wide logistics and supply chain headwinds. In addition to elevated sales across the business, our order book increased each month during the first quarter and continues to grow.”

2021 First Quarter Segment Results

Horizon Americas. Net sales increased $17.4 million, or 18.8%, to $109.8 million. The net sales increase was primarily driven by a $9.8 million combined increase in the automotive OEM and automotive OES sales channels as well as a $4.9 million increase in the aftermarket sales channels driven by higher sales volumes as compared to the prior year comparable period that was impacted by business disruptions due to the COVID-19 global pandemic beginning in the second half of March 2020. Gross profit increased $9.7 million primarily related to higher net sales coupled with operational improvements and manufacturing efficiencies recognized across the operating segment, partially offset by higher outbound freight costs related to higher sales volumes. Horizon Americas generated an operating profit of $11.8 million, an improvement of $9.1 million compared to the prior year comparable period, driven by the segment’s favorable gross profit. Adjusted EBITDA(1) increased to $12.9 million during the first quarter of 2021, as compared to $6.1 million for the prior year comparable period.

Horizon Europe-Africa. Net sales increased $18.5 million, or 26.1%, to $89.4 million. The net sales increase was primarily driven by a $10.8 million combined increase in the automotive OEM and automotive OES sales channels, as well as a $6.7 million increase in the aftermarket sales channel driven by higher sales volumes as compared to the prior year comparable period that was impacted by business disruptions due to the COVID-19 global pandemic beginning in the second half of March 2020. Gross profit increased $4.7 million, due to higher net sales coupled with favorable manufacturing costs. Horizon Europe-Africa generated an operating profit of $1.5 million, an improvement of $4.0 million compared to the prior year comparable period, driven by the segment’s favorable gross profit. Adjusted EBITDA(1) increased to $5.4 million for the quarter, as compared to $2.3 million for the prior year comparable period.

Balance Sheet and Liquidity. Cash and Availability(2) was $63.4 million, a reduction of $20.0 million compared to December 31, 2020, and an increase of $12.6 million compared to March 31, 2020. Working Capital(3) was $81.8 million, an increase of $26.2 million compared to December 31, 2020, primarily reflecting strategic build of inventory in preparation to meet significant open order and customer demand in anticipation of traditional peak selling season. Gross debt increased $14.3 million to $280.4 million compared to December 31, 2020, primarily reflecting proceeds from the term loan refinancing completed during the first quarter of 2021.

Summary

Gohl commented, “As we enter the traditional peak selling season in North America, we have strong order book momentum and a focused operation plan expected to expand our market share in a profitable manner. Also, as planned, we are now proceeding to the execution phase of our operational excellence measures across our Europe-Africa segment. This will result in a more efficient and flexible manufacturing footprint enabling us to optimize our sales mix and realize profitable growth in the segment. We expect our global efforts to generate both near- and long-term value for our employees, customers and shareholders.”

Reconciliation of Reported Revenue Growth
to Constant Currency Basis
(Unaudited)

We evaluate growth in our operations on both an as reported and a constant currency basis. The constant currency presentation, which is a non-GAAP measure, excludes the impact of fluctuations in foreign currency exchange rates. We believe providing constant currency information provides valuable supplemental information regarding our growth, consistent with how we evaluate our performance. Constant currency revenue results are calculated by translating current year revenue in local currency using the prior year’s currency conversion rate. This non-GAAP measure has limitations as an analytical tool and should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for an analysis of our results as reported under GAAP. Our use of this term may vary from the use of similarly-titled measures by other issuers due to the potential inconsistencies in the method of calculation and differences due to items subject to interpretation.
